Pallone: EPA's Final Methane Rule Defies Both Science and Human Decency

Statement

Date: Aug. 13, 2020

Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today condemning the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) final rule to gut methane pollution standards:

"The Trump Administration is finalizing yet another dangerous policy that puts the needs of polluters before the health and welfare of Americans. Today's action by EPA to gut commonsense methane requirements for the oil and gas sector defies both science and human decency. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and a major driver of climate change, and oil and gas operations expose countless communities to surging levels of hazardous air pollution. Weakening these protections in the midst of a respiratory illness pandemic that the President has failed to adequately address is beyond unconscionable.

"Sadly, this is exactly the kind of irrational and self-serving behavior we have come to expect from the Trump Administration, but that makes it no less jarring or dangerous. The American people deserve better."
